Re: Pure Star Trek Discussion
Well lets hope we get a second flick to allow these actors to better inform us of their personalities and help us to settle into this new time line.
What drove me nuts is Quinto's boyish voice. His performance was excellent, but every time he spoke I just couldn't say Spock, due to Nimoy's far more baritone voice stuck in my head.

Re: Pure Star Trek Discussion
Hitler apparently was disappointed with the new Star Trek movie as well
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9i9N-Ez5Y8
This clip is one of a million parodies of a scene in the movie The Downfall/Der Untergang (excellent movie by the way) Since the movie is in German, people just change the subtitles from anything from star trek to hannah montana .... they are hilarious!

Re: Pure Star Trek Discussion
BC, may you be ever blessed for posting that link. That's possibly the best riff on the Hitler movie yet! It was hysterical!
Val, your theory is possible but I never got the impression watching the movie that this was premeditated. But to me, the most improbable part of the quarry sequence is that he jumps out and is able to keep from being carried over the edge by momentum.

Re: Pure Star Trek Discussion
There was a Star Trek convention in Las Vegas this weekend, featuring Shatner and Nimoy. Here are some choice bits from the TrekMovie article. Warning: some bits of news that Val won't like....
Quote:
Shatner: Finally seen Star Trek 2009 + Pine to join Captains doc +STV lessons
Nimoy’s solo time transitioned for Shatner’s solo time, and the original Kirk began with going over his various projects, like Aftermath, $#!* My Dad Says, Raw Nerve, Weird or What, and his new The Captains doc (more on that below). Things moved onto Q&A and one of the questions asked him why he doesn’t want to see the new Star Trek movie. Shatner replied with a yell "have I got a surprise…I saw it! I saw that wonderful motion picture!" Bill then recalled how after meeting JJ Abrams before the film was made he "sat by the phone but it never rang" until Leonard Nimoy called with the news of his return to Spock and Bill’s reply was "they are doing it without me?!"
Shatner updates crowd on projects – revealing Chris Pine will join "The Captains" doc Regarding Bill’s The Captains doc, Shatner confirmed that Chris Pine, Star Trek’s new Kirk, will be included. The film crew for The Captains were filming his appearance on stage and were also filming Bill around the con (see photo below). Regarding this, Bill said "it was so much fun, walking among you, I’ve never done that before except once before and I was wearing a mask." Recalling interviewing Avery Brooks for The Captains, Bill talked about how impressed he was with his resume as a professor, musician and actor, but noted "Avery Brooks is a magnificent guy, but he is kind of out there." But Bill was so impressed with Brooks’ ability as a jazz pianist he asked him to provide music. Shatner also revealed that he asked George Takei to participate in the documentary and Takei declined.
|
The bits, of course, that won't please Val are that Shatner claims he liked Abrams' movie (and why would he burn his bridge to the next one by saying he didn't like it), AND Chris Pine WILL be in his captains' documentary.
Tweaking Val's nose aside, I was sorry to read that Shatner asked Takei to be in the Captain's documentary and Takei turned him down. I don't think George is going to get over being bitter at Shatner. He's picking up where the late Jimmy Doohan left off, unfortunately.
Be sure to go to http://trekmovie.com/2010/08/09/vega...r-trek-sequel/ and read the whole thing. I left most of it out for reasons of length. But there were some funny and touching moments in the full article.

Re: Pure Star Trek Discussion
And yet MORE from the con...will it never end???
Quote:
Next Gen on Blu-ray?
All three seasons of the originalStar Trek are now available in HD, but what about TNG? In a response to a question about TNG on Blu-ray, CBS Consumer Products VP John Van Citters told the crowd in Las Vegas that releasing Star Trek: The Next Generation on Blu-ray was much more "problematic" than the original Star Trek, due to how the TNG original effects shots were composited, and how that makes the transfer to HD "incredibly difficult without making them look awful." However, he also said that there is "a lot of conversations going on" within CBS on how to convert TNG to HD, and Van Citters expressed optimism noting "It is being worked on and I expect it will happen, it is just a technical challenge."
Following his talk, I confirmed with Van Citters that even though he is optimistic that the challenges will be met, as of now there is no specific plan or budget for the project within CBS. So this is still something that is a long-term project.

Re: Pure Star Trek Discussion
Yep, I think the Shat was being diplomatic for the sake of the fans and his chances of being in the next movie, so good for him. However, I don't think he believes for one second that Pine was a better Kirk than him or that the movie was better than any of the ones he was in.
As for including Pine on the doco, oh well... so be it. I still think Pine has a long way to earn those gold stripes on his sleeve though.
Pity about Takei, yes. However justified he is/was in his grudge, this just really makes him look petty and small-minded now. While Shatner appears to have taken the high road on this issue in his later years, some people just can't let this stuff go. I feel sorry for George; it's so not worth it.

Re: Pure Star Trek Discussion
I figured that Takei had somewhat buried the hatchet a few years ago whenever he roasted Shatner on the comedy central roast.

Re: Pure Star Trek Discussion
I suspect he only just needed the money and that's why he did that gig. Hell of a note to think that was why, but I bet it was.
